Someone I Love Is Having Suicidal Thoughts: What to Do

Finding out someone you love is having suicidal thoughts is terrifying. You might feel helpless, scared, or unsure of what to say. This guide will help you support them effectively while taking care of yourself.

The Question You Need to Ask

"Are you thinking about ending your life?"

Ask directly. Use clear language. Don't dance around it.

Myth: Asking about suicide plants the idea in someone's head.

Truth: Research shows asking about suicide does NOT increase suicidal thoughts. In fact, it can reduce them by opening the door to help.

What to Say

DO Say:

  • "Thank you for telling me. That took courage."
  • "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."
  • "Let's get you help right now."

DON'T Say:

  • "You have so much to live for."
  • "Think about your family."
  • "You're being selfish."
