Taking Care of Yourself While Helping Others

Caregiver burnout is real. Learn how to set boundaries and get support for yourself.

Signs of Burnout

  • Constant worry about the person
  • Neglecting your own needs
  • Resentment building
  • Physical symptoms (headaches, fatigue)
  • Feeling helpless

Setting Boundaries

You can care deeply AND have limits:

  • "I'm here for you, but I need to sleep"
  • "Let's make sure you have crisis resources for tonight"
  • "I can talk for 30 minutes now"

Get Support for Yourself

  • Talk to your own therapist
  • Join a support group (NAMI has free groups)
  • Take breaks when needed
  • Practice self-care

Remember

You are not responsible for keeping them alive. You can support and love them, but you cannot control their actions.

You can't pour from an empty cup.
