The 6 steps
Each step is short. You can skip and come back, and add as much or as little as you want.
Step 1
Warning signs
Thoughts, images, mood states, situations, or behaviors that tell you a crisis may be developing.
Step 2
Internal coping strategies
Things you can do on your own to take your mind off the crisis. No one else needs to be involved.
Step 3
People & places that distract me
People you can talk to or places you can go to take your mind off the crisis. You don't have to share what is happening.
Step 4
People I can ask for help
Friends, family, or others you can tell what you are going through and ask for support.
Step 5
Professionals & agencies
People and services you can contact during a crisis. We pre-filled the national lifelines — add your therapist, doctor, or local crisis center too.
Step 6
Making my environment safe
Steps to remove or reduce access to anything you might use to harm yourself. This is the single most evidence-backed part of the plan.
Why this works
Safety planning is one of the few interventions with strong evidence for reducing suicidal behavior. It works because, in a crisis, decision-making narrows — having steps written down ahead of time gives you something concrete to reach for.
Evidence-based
Built on the Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention, the most-studied model for clinician use after a crisis evaluation.
Private
Drafts are saved on your device by default. Logged-in users can save the plan to their account; admins never see individual plans.
Printable
Generates a clean, single-page printout. Save as PDF in your browser, or print and keep somewhere easy to find.
For counselors and educators
You can refer students or clients here directly. The output mirrors the standard Stanley-Brown format, which is easy to review or attach to a clinical record (with the user's consent). Learn about MindHaven for schools.
